Anyone can build a website; but do you want just anyone building yours? Don't be mislead by others, this is one question that only you can answer. Your website is an extension of your brand. So, ask yourself if you want just anyone managing your brand.


When it comes to building a website or managing a brand, price is not everything. If success matters, make the right decision and find the right firm that will make your website reflect your mission, vision, and the brand and image you want to convey. Let's face it... we all know someone, and everyone has a nephew or a niece, or a friend, or a neighbor’s kid that can build a website. Remember, sometimes cheap is reflective of quality, not just price. No doubt you can find companies that offer websites at a low cost; look closely, however, because many of them promote templates. Yes, templates. That means you and hundreds of others share the same exact look or feel.


Sure, if you are one of those that is fine being like everyone else, or if you have what others are having, then it might be a good choice for you. However, before you sign anything, figure out how many ‘clicks’ it takes to reach the objective or target information you want your audience to find. See how easy is it to find pages or data on the website. Look at how functional the website is or will be, how feature rich it is, and ask yourself whether it leverages the newest technologies or web 2.0 and web 3.0 tools. Most importantly, will it keep the interest of your audience, or will it cause them to leave and outright abandon your site - never to return. Websites that look nice are great; but just because they look nice doesn't mean they deliver. So, yes, websites that deliver results are better. But, the goal should be to find a company or agency that combines a great looking website with functionality, usability, tools, and technologies that make your website more engaging, and make it stand out and deliver results!


When you talk with a web firm, ask about the degree of effort they put into understanding your mission (not only for your business, but the website as well). Ask them how they determine what class or format you like, or more importantly how they determine what your customers may want. Find out what level of research they put in to understanding the buying habits of your audience. Ask them how they test usability and ease of use for websites, and be sure to ask them about their process for determining information architecture, user flow, and paths that a user will take on the website. While you are at it, ask if they have experience working with companies of different sizes, across industries. Our guess, yes, there are a few; but not many will pass the test. In our experience, many companies and clients first spend thousands with other companies and firms, and then come to realize their website is just a dud.


If you just want to launch a website because “everyone else has one”, then consider this: reacting too quickly or launching a website that is just a template or too similar to others may hurt your brand or image.
